Sunflowers

The world is heavy. Can we forget for an afternoon? Let’s sit on the porch. Let’s talk and laugh as friends.

I am tired of looking at cracks in the sidewalk. Let’s be simple. The elderberries are ripe, the tree frogs are keening, the sun is shining. Have you noticed the crickets are singing all day? Have you smelled the bee balm and the phlox? Time is passing. This day is only once; how many have we missed?

Wonder and beauty are! There is nothing to be done, only to choose to see. We can do that today. I know we have serious matters; let them wait.

Soon the sunflowers will bow their heads with next year’s responsibility, but today they watch the sun. Tomorrow tell me again: what was so important?
