Blue Design

Hello and welcome! I am exploring some things that don’t have singular or simple answers, collectively grouped under the term Blue Design. Over time, the structure of this exploration has evolved. Lately it has coalesced around three main topics:

•  I am interested in what we find to be meaningful in our lives, and why.

•  I am interested in the relationships we create with each other and the Earth.

•  I am interested in a multidimensional and difficult to define concept called synthesis, which I believe needs to be a sort of guiding star for the first two things.

I believe if we are purposeful about the relationships we make, and we seek greater meaning and synthesis in our lives, good things happen as a result: happiness, personal fulfillment, and a healthy relationship with the Earth.

I also believe (and this may seem odd at first blush) that these three topics have rich implications on architecture, which is the business I am engaged in. But it takes patience to find their relevance; something we are not often afforded these days.

This website is a library of my thinking over time. The older things have less relevance than the newer things, because my work is always evolving. I realize this can make it difficult for the first-time reader, so here are some tips: At the right you will see listed the earliest versions of Blue Design, and there is a video summary here. Below are some seminal early essays. But the freshest and best thinking is on the Building Bridges tab.

I hope that the things I am exploring on this site are also important to you, and please contribute your thoughts to the posts!

Centers

stone walk thumb

This post covers a large breadth of territory. It presents centers as an organizing principle, and convergences (made centers), as a means to apply system thinking and regenerative design. Most importantly, it proposes a process to realize building as a product of the systems and centers of its place.

Cycles

creating a relationship with nature

Thinking about cycles is a powerful thing; the entrée to thinking in systems and a key to Blue Design. Thinking in cycles focuses on following a single component through its cycle in the system. Cycles are easy to see in the world around us, if we tune ourselves to them.

Beauty: Control and Depth

controlling beauty

What happens when we release our desire to control nature? Recognizing the natural beauty that exists without our influence is required when applying the theories of Blue Design. In this essay, I reach beyond conventional perceptions of beauty in built and natural worlds, in a search for more meaningful, connected definitions that speak of a new harmony between the works of man and nature.
